Iran Sends Warships Off Coast of Yemen

Tensions in the Middle East escalated to another level this week in stark contrast to the conciliatory tone of the nuclear deal with Iran, whose deadline for final terms is one month from today.

Reports show not only Iranian-backed Shia militia, but Huthis attacking Saudi installments along Yemen’s borders. As a result, both U.S. and Iranian warships have increased activity in surrounding waters of the Arabian peninsula.

Earlier this week, news reported and Iranian warship “harassing’” a U.S.-flagged supply ship. After this, the ship stopped and boarded another ship. Those events culminated in the pentagon ordering U.S. warships to the Straits of Hormuz, a narrow channel that separates Iran from the Arabian peninsula.
This event foreshadows future U.S. action and U.S. presence will likely remain to act as a deterrent for further aggression from Iran’s navy.

In response to the move by the Pentagon, Iran quickly responded by sending two destroyers to the Gulf of Aden, just off the coast of embattled Yemen which continues to teeter on the brink of total collapse under the Huthi takeover.

The Iranian rear admiral in charge of the fleet denied Iranian support for the Huthi rebels. He explained the Iranian navy in the Gulf of Aden was merely to protect against pirating of commercial ships in the area.

Some analysts believe, should the nuclear deal with Iran fall apart, U.S. relations with Iran will free-fall as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
